By: Linda Hayes

Acne is no longer only a symptoms of teenagers going through puberty. Adult acne affects more than 25% of the total population of both sexes. It also seems to affect women more seriously in most cases. About half of the population goes through periods in their lives where they have bad skin, so you are not alone here!

If you have mild to moderate cases of adult acne, you can ahead and treat it like normal teenager's acne. Acne caused by over-active oil glands requires similar treatment. For more serious cases of adult acne caused by imbalance of hormones, stress or unhealthy lifestyles, the following treatments are available.

For women, they tend to experience more breakouts around their periods, pregnancy and even menopause as well. A recent study conducted by dermatologist Alan Shalita suggests that more than half of the female population are affected by acne flares-up before their periods. Usually these type of acne doesn't respond well to traditional therapy such as topical retinoids and antibiotics.

Adult acne patients often experience irregular menstrual cycles as well as increased breakouts during that time of the month. Oiliness in the face and increased level of certain kinds of androgens are also good indications of hormonal adult acne. Most of the hormonal acne sufferers are in their 20s and 30s and some of them have lesions on their lower face, especially in their jawline and neck area. Breakouts on their chests and backs are also common adult acne symptoms.

Hormonal adult acne can rarely be treated by topical medications alone. Genearlly, it requires small dosage birth control pills to guide the hormones back on track. Always consult with your dermatologist if you suffer from this kind of acne as he or she would recommend the most effective treatments for you.

Most adult acne sufferers benefit from an increased quality of sleep, drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day as well as lower stress level and quitting smoking. Using over-aggressive acne treating products would only backfires with dryness of the skin and increased oil production. So remember to consult with your dermatologist before using any topical medications.
